DAY VISITOR Excursion
Departing from the Old Pier in Lamlash, the crossing to Holy Isle takes approximately 15 minutes. You will have 4 hours to spend on and enjoy Holy Isle before the return boat to Lamlash.
Things to do
You can take a walk along the coastal path on the west side of the island, viewing St Molaise’s Cave, the Healing well and Tibetan Buddhist rock paintings, whilst taking in the beautiful natural environment as you go. This path leads ultimately to Pillar Rock lighthouse (the Northern Lighthouse Board’s first square lighthouse) at the south end of the island. More details on this walk can be found on the Holy Isle website.
Alternatively, you may wish to take the path to the highest point on the island, Mullach Mòr, where you can enjoy spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde.
Please Note
- There are no facilities on Holy Isle so come prepared with your food and drink supplies and ensure you dress appropriately for the weather.
- In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife, we do not take dogs onto the island (with the exception of assistance dogs).
- We aim to be as inclusive as possible and wish to support everyone from all backgrounds and abilities to enjoy our cruises and crossings. We will provide active assistance to all passengers boarding our boats. However, please be aware that the boats are always accessed from the pier steps so, regrettably, direct wheelchair accessibility is not possible.
- There is no need to pay for children under 5 years old but please let us know you are bringing them by adding a note in the ‘Additional Information’ section in the online booking.

Grant and Izzy were very welcoming, extremely knowledgeable and great all round company. A wealth of knowledge was given along with clear instruction on the walks available. I did the ridge walk and the 4 hours afforded on the isle is plenty of time to do it at a slowish pace. 360 views from the top are spectacular, flora and fauna also amazing. The boat trip to the island ran like clockwork, and the whole trip was really great. 4 hours is plenty of time for a good walk around the island, a picnic etc. The team were super knowledgeable and gave great advice on where to go when on the island, and I saw ponies and the Soay sheep. On the way back, the children on the trip with their families were allowed to ‘drive’ the boat which was obviously very exciting for them. An all round fun day out, and the perfect day trip from Arran! Would highly recommend!

Thoroughly enjoyable trip to the Holy Isle with Lamlash Cruises. We had a gorgeous day weather wise with barely a ripple on the water and a very pleasant 22d temperature. We met the lads at the pier for the introductions before boarding the boat for the 15 minute crossing. When we landed on Holy Isle we had a 10 minute briefing on where to go, what to see, what to look out for etc and then had the next 4 hours to enjoy the magnificent scenery. There were many sightings of various animals and birds but the joint highlight for me was watching the peregrine falcons coming and going to their nest closely followed by seeing the humpback whale breaching just off the Pillar Rock lighthouse.

Had a fabulous family day on Holy Isle. The introductory talk on arrival was very useful, and with the information given about timings, we decided to walk over Mullach Mor and return along the coastal path. We were also fortunate enough to see the Soay sheep, goats and Eriskay ponies, albeit from a distance! The crew were very helpful and friendly to all on board and set the tone for the day, with the group photo on the return trip, the icing on the cake. Would certainly recommend and hopefully return.

A unique experience – the Holy Isle is incredibly quiet and peaceful, with no motor vehicles – we saw a couple of handcarts 🙂 – and all the animals are truly wild (saanen goats, soay sheep, eriskay ponies). We had a lovely walk along the island, down to Pillar Rock Lighthouse and back. David, our skipper on the boat, was a friendly and knowledgeable host, and made us very welcome. Holy Isle well worth a visit and the experience if seeing ponies, sheep, goats and other wildlife while on the walk was amazing. As it is only a short sail from Lamlash to the island there is plenty time left to explore . We were extremely lucky last week with the beautiful weather we had which was a bonus. Highly recommend this trip and Lamlash Cruises, we would have no hesitation in booking again.

We enjoyed everything about our day trip to The Holy Isle. The boat rides to and from the Isle were gorgeous, and the introduction and explanation of the history and rules for visitors was presented clearly and well. We enjoyed our attempt to climb to the top of the hills as well as our hurried visit to the cave and healing spring. It was a delightful experience.

Sun came out as we arrived on the Holy Island and made for a truly magical day out. I was born on Arran but this was my first visit to the Holy Island. Our hosts were wonderful, great fun and very knowledgeable about the fascinating history of the little island. We wandered through a herd of Eriskay ponies with foals, one mare had twins, a white and a dark one. We enjoyed our picnic taking in the most stunning scenery of Arrans hills and coastline and watching the wading birds dotted along the beach. The cave visit and experience gave a beautiful spiritual touch to the day. We visited the garden by the jetty before leaving, which was an absolute treasure trove of flowers and edibles. Can’t wait to go back to this little place of paradise.

What a lovely crew who put the “F” in FUN! Nice short hop over to Holy Isle (which is amazing!), with lots of care helping us passengers safely on and off the pontoons and boat during very choppy stormy weather.

My husband and I went to the Holy Isle from the Isle of Arran on the Thursday 12th October 2023. We could not have been looked after better than we were. My husband is in his mid 80’s and I am in my mid 70’s and everything was made very easy getting on and off the boat. When we were arrived someone came on shore to give us a talk to tell us what to expect and what to look out for, and then the boat departed back to Arran and we were left to wander peacefully and to appreciate the nature of that beautiful Isle, until the boat returned to collect us all four hours later. Lamlash Cruises are quite wonderful and the two men and the one woman who looked after us could not have been kinder. They also take a group photo of everyone on the return journey to email us all as a memento of the wonderful experience. Thank you all at Lamlash Cruises.

I really loved the day visitor excursion to Holy Isle. The island is remarkable for its freely roaming unusual wildlife, including ponies, soay sheep and goats, and for its complete lack of roads and road vehicles. The people at Lamlash Cruises were lovely to us. They took the time to explain things about the island to me. They also were very good with my two young children, being very friendly and welcoming to them and giving them special help on and off the boat. We will be back to do this again!

Fantastic day out , the skipper and crew of the boat were so nice and informative about the Isle. We had plenty of time to hike over the top, have a picnic by the far lighthouse and stroll back seeing all the sights along the way. Would definitely recommend.
